Master your own self-discipline in “5… 4… 3…

“5… 4…. 3…. 2…. 1”

Transform your life with a countdown

We’re used to seeing action when we count down to one.

NASA count down to one to launch their rockets.

Parents count down to one to get their kids to behave.

So how does it work?

Simply put, you count down from 5 in your head, and when you reach one, you must MOVE or ACT.

It’s like playing a trick on your own brain.

Using this trick, you can train yourself to break bad habits, and begin good ones.

So next time you’re doing something that you know is a bad habit (like scrolling on Instagram, reaching for yet another Oreo, or snoozing your alarm), count down from 5 in your head, and physically MOVE your body when you get to one.

Changing your physical position indicates to your brain that its time to do something different.

Use it to help you get out of bed in the morning

When that morning alarm goes off, count down “5,4,3,2,1”. Get up, out of the bed and stand on your feet.

The movement will help you wake up, and it’ll be easier to do the next step of your morning routine.

Use it to get out the door for a walk each day

This same trick also applies to beginning good habits, like going for a walk each day.

Next time you’re sitting on the couch, consuming Netflix and snacks at the same rate, count down from 5.

On 1; stand up, pause the show and go put your sneakers on.

This small act tells your brain “it’s time for a jog”. You’ve done the hardest part — motivating yourself.

Once your sneakers are on and you’re standing at the front door, it doesn’t seem so hard to ‘go for a walk’ — it seems obvious.

Not just for motivating yourself to get out of bed and exercise every day, this rule can also be applied to our thoughts, feelings and emotions.

Mel’s readers have used it to break addictions, lose weight, repair relationships and stop anxious thoughts.
